I didn’t realize I was an empath who absorbed all of the dysfunction around me growing up. I was a high-achiever, so I hid my despair a lot, but I also hid in bed for days on end. I also struggled with chronic pain, which doctors ultimately diagnosed as chronic Lyme disease, along with a host of co-infections, hormonal disorders and mast cell activation. The intense pain, depression and anxiety drove me to stay in bed for days and weeks, shrinking my life down to mere survival. I’ve tried just about every therapy under the sun, from dozens of allopathic medications and treatments to acupuncture, homeopathy, and naturopathic remedies, as well as traditional and way-out there psychotherapies.
